An exotic animal is defined by the exotic pet insurance companies as any pet other than a cat or dog. They consider exotic animals to have special needs if they are different than the normal care associated with a dog or cat. From an exotic pet insurance carrier’s point of view, rodents such as mice, guinea pigs, and hamsters don’t have a long life span. They normally live from two to five years, depending upfront the particular species. The big concern with rodents is dental care because their teeth continuously grow. The entire avian community is a wonderful yet delicate pets. Health issues of birds are usually the result of injuries or accidents. Mishandling, lack of water and unclipped wings are among the leading causes of death. Pigs have been around for years in the commercial livestock realm. However, potbelly pigs and many other kinds of pigs are becoming more popular and are still considered and exotic pet. They are likely to develop digestive or respiratory issues. Lizards have extremely long life spans which most of their owners don’t realize. Snakes, iguanas, turtles and others have detailed health requirements that mostly have to do with nutrition and the actual feeding. An exotic pet health insurance policy can be around twelve dollars which would cover a certain percentage for an accident or illness. There is normally a cap on the dollar amount that the insurance will cover. Basic coverage normally covers infections, self-mutilation and illness up to a certain dollar amount. Of course the more coverage you want the higher the premium. |

I wonder if I should get this insurance for my pet boa? It's not like I have to run him to the vet all the time but it would still be nice to know that he is covered in case something did happen to him.
