The main group of Dogs for the Deaf branches its efforts into other groups such as Harmony’s Hounds, Hearing Dogs, Career Change Dogs, and The Autism Assistance Dog Program. The four legged friends are rescued from shelters when they are between 8 months and 3 years old. All the dogs are vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered.
The Hearing Dogs group, in association with Dogs for the Deaf have dogs trained to help alert individuals to sounds such as an alarm clock, doorbell, telephone, a door knock, a smoke or fire alarms and an oven timer. Some of the dogs can even be trained recognize a baby’s cry and alert their owner. The work that this group does is extremely important when you consider that of the more than twenty-three hard of hearing or deaf individuals in the U.S. and Canada; at least one and one-half million could be helped with trained dogs.
